Bayswater Primary School - Devonport - 6 kW

At Bayswater School, Education for Sustainability has gathered in strength over the past ten years to whole school and community involvement. Curriculum driven learning has provided the foundation for all sustainable environmental practices.

Sir Peter Blake is our school hero. As the ‘Boy from Bayswater’ (he attended Bayswater School) he believed that individual and team effort can change the way the world thinks about the environment. He also said, ‘having vision is not enough. Change comes through realising the vision and turning it into reality’. We, as the new ‘Kids from Bayswater’ truly believe this as we strive to prove that sustainability is achievable.

From 2008 we have been very fortunate to be part of Genesis Energy's Schoolgen programme; a huge and exciting step forward in our sustainable future action plan. From the arrival of our solar panels in 2008, the school has incorporated learning about renewable energy and energy conservation into more general learning.  In 2012, we were lucky enough to receive a large screen from Genesis.  This displays data about the electricity we generate through our photovoltaic panels and also about our energy consumption.  This too has been incorporated into the children’s learning.  Monitoring how much electricity we are generating and consuming helps the children to think about energy efficiency and conservation.  The children are currently exploring ways to incorporate this new information into their ‘Larry the Light Bulb’ award, made weekly at assembly to the most energy efficient classroom.

In April 2014 the second solar array was installed. This is made up of 16 panels of 250 Watts each giving a total capacity of 4000 Watts of 4 kilowatts.

The first solar array was installed in June 2008 and is made up of 12 panels of 170 Watts each giving a total capacity of 2040 Watts, or slightly over 2 kilowatts. 

It is interesting to note the steady improvements in the technology over this time. Although each new panel has about 25% more area than the old ones, they can produce nearly 50% more power. This means less roof area is needed to generate the same amount of electricity.
