Churton Park Primary School - Wellington City - 4 kW
Churton Park is a growing community of about 7,000 residents on the northern fringe of Wellington City.
In 2014 we were privileged to be selected by Genesis Energy to become a Schoolgen school. Thanks to the partnership between Genesis Energy and the Wellington City Council have installed sufficient solar PV panels to produce up to 4 kilowatts of power.
Our Green Journey began some years ago and has continued to grow as more opportunities arise and initiatives are able to be actioned. We have a robust recycling with bins to recycle paper and food waste. The food waste is composted and the resulting ‘worm wee’ sold to our teachers and community.
A garden produces vegetables which has become more productive recently with the installation of our two scare crows, aptly named after the two heroes we admire – Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Peter Blake.
Last year a group of students established a business designing T shirts with our logo “Connected” printed on the front. We do not have a school uniform so these T shirts, worn regularly by students, have become very much a part of who we are.
Notices appear in each room reminding users to switch-off lights when the room is no longer in use. Certificates are handed out to the rooms who observe this energy-saving behaviour, at assembly, each week.
We are very excited and proud to be a part of the Schoolgen Programme and we look forward to using the wonderful resources and teaching materials to help us all become even more knowledgeable about how we can save energy.
