Douglas Park School - Masterton - 2 kw

At Douglas Park School kids are leading their learning and they are not afraid to be the first to do things differently! We are a Silver Level Enviro School, heading for Green Gold late 2009. Our kids take action in, and for their environment as part of their learning.

This was especially evident in our Sustainable Schools Inquiry Topic in Term 3 in 2008. This topic started with the Senior Kahikatea Syndicate's big question being "How can we make our hall renovations more sustainable?" and our Junior Kowhai Syndicate wondering "How can we save energy at DPS?". These big questions sent our kids off in different directions researching energy sources and options to save power throughout the school. Room 13 (Year 3) presented their work as an infomericial to educate our school community and Room 10 (Year 1/2) designed posters to be displayed around our school.

Room 11(Year 5/6) students dreamed big and started to investigate sustainable energy sources. While searching the Internet for information they found Schoolgen and began to apply by themselves! They were not afraid to ring the local council asking all manner of difficult question... and then they started ringing Genesis Energy. They researched every step of the way and hosted the visiting judging panel. The judges were very impressed!

Finally with much anticipation the big day came....A loud cheer could be heard all over DPS when Room 11 found out they were selected!

All the staff, fellow students and school community were incredibly proud. Well done Room 11!
