Kimbolton School - Manawatu - 2 kw

Kimbolton School is a small country school located approx 26km north of Feilding in the Manawatu. We have 60 children and we are currently working toward our Level Three Enviroschools Award (Green Gold). We have been involved in Environmental Education since 2003 and have won many regional, national and international awards for the work we do. At Kimbolton School all students are involved in caring for our environment, and we also involve the community as a whole in many of our numerous projects. We reuse and recycle, have two worm bins, an organic vegetable garden and fruit trees, grow pingao for dune restoration and native trees to replant local areas. We also look after the Kimbolton Scenic Bush Reserve and a group of children take tours through educating both students from other schools and interested adults about the forest ecosystems.

One of our groups has been looking at the consumption of electricity in the school and ways we can save electricity. Applying to be part of the Genesis Schoolgen Solar Panel Project was a next step for us to help students understand sustainable energy sources. We hope our students will gain a better understanding of energy consumption at school and in New Zealand as a whole. We also hope they will learn more about how we can manage our school energy consumption in a more sustainable way. Our children understand that we rely on electricity to maintain our lifestyles so we hope they will gain more of an understanding of sustainable ways to produce power, the effects the production has on our environment, and how we can lessen our eco footprint.

We thank Genesis Energy for this wonderful opportunity to help our school and our students gain a deeper understanding of our dependence on electricity, its impact on the environment and ways we can manage our supply in a more sustainable manner. We are all very excited and looking forward to working with the Schoolgen team to further develop citizenship by teaching our students to think globally and act locally.
