Paremata School - Porirua - 2 kw

Paremata Primary school is focused on working towards ecological sustainability. For many years we have composted waste food in our worm bins and recycled our waste paper. Last year we introduced recycling of number four, five and six plastics and have made this open for the community to use. We have also focused on planting trees and gardens to help reduce our carbon footprint.

Over the last three years our school has won eight awards at the NIWA science fair. Six of those awards were for projects with an ecological sustainability focus. Last year we won the overall NIWA award for researching which turbines were most efficient in windmills. The same project won the Futures Trust award.

Last year we were involved in Take Action for Water - a project run by the Greater Wellington Regional Council. As a part of that initiative students developed their own initiatives to sustain our local environment. These included: children walking to school, monitoring and reducing water wastage, reducing rubbish by having ‘wrapper free’ days, and monitoring and reducing energy wastage.

Our school motto is ‘Attitude determines altitude’. We definitely have the attitude and looking forward to working with Genesis Energy to reach new altitudes.
