How Can We Use Less Electricity In Our Classroom?

Intended Learning Outcomes

The students will be able to:

  • name the electrical appliances that operate in the classroom
  • describe actions that can be taken to make the classroom appliances work more efficiently
  • describe and carry out a number of actions to reduce the amount of electricity used in the classroom
  • state the class electrical safety rules and explain why they are needed.

Teaching Rationales

The students will:

  • explore the concept that electrical appliances change electrical energy into other forms of energy (heat, light, sound and movement)
  • identify all the electrical appliances they use in the classroom and what sort of energy each provides
  • discuss ways to use less electrical energy in the classroom and design and implement an action plan to reduce the use of electricity in the classroom
  • be encouraged to take regular actions to save power and be energy-efficient.

Learning Areas, Strands, Achievement Objectives

1 - 2 Science

Physical World
Physical inquiry and physics concepts

  • Students will explore everyday examples of physical phenomena, such as movement, forces, electricity and magnetism, light, sound, waves, and heat. Students will seek and describe simple patterns in physical phenomena.

Nature of Science
Participating and contributing

  • Students will extend their experiences and personal explanations of the natural world through exploration, play, asking questions and discussing simple models.

Participating and contributing

  • Students will explore and act on issues and questions that link their science learning to their daily living.
  English

Listening, Reading, and Viewing and Speaking, Writing, and Presenting Ideas

  • Students will show some understanding of ideas within, across and beyond texts.

Processes and strategies

  • Students will select and use sources of information, processes, and strategies with some confidence to identify, form and express ideas.

Activity-specific Achievement Objectives

1 - 2 Science

Physical World
Physical inquiry and physics concepts

  • Students will explore and investigate the physical phenomena of electricity and its use in the everyday situation of their classroom.

Nature of Science
Participating and contributing

  • Students will explore ways to reduce electricity use in their classroom and take action, as an individual and as a class, to save power.
  English

Listening, Reading, and Viewing and Speaking, Writing, and Presenting Ideas

  • Students will acquire topic-specific vocabulary (relating to electricity) and use this vocabulary when they form and express ideas.
